MEHMET YAVAS (Can-Gole Village)
.

I was born in 1891. I am eighty-nine years old. I have fought in the Balkans, in Russia and in Gallipoli. I returned home in sixteen years.

I have participated in the war we fought against the Bulgarians. When they have defeated us, I came to Istanbul. Later, the army demobilised us and we returned home.

Then the mobilisation has been introduced. I was sent to Gallipoli. We have dug the trenches out for six months, in Helles. Later we dug out trenches in Sogandere.

MEHMET YAVAS (Can-Gole Village)

Towards morning, a ship has come by Helles. It anchored. As the sun has risen, we saw thousand of boats floating on the sea. They were full of soldiers. They were sailing towards us. When they have entered the range of our rifles, we began shooting. Until noon, we damaged their boats. Neither their boats ended nor their soldiers...

The sea was full of ships. They had many battleships. The bombs were flying on our heads. They were trying to hinder the reinforcements. They buried 26th Regiment. Twenty-five of us have found a narrow tunnel and survived. Then we found ourselves in Helles. A major led us towards a stream. He was shouting “Friends, we are loosing our homeland and honour!” With the major, we were just twenty-six men.

In Sogandere, we attacked on the enemy. The enemy’s naval bombardment was continuing. We were firing our guns; they were marching on us. Until the evening, the situation remained same. Then 25th Regiment came to reinforce us. In Sogandere, I was wounded from my leg and waist. The bullet is still inside. The doctor bandaged my wound and I returned to the trench.

On the nights the enemy was coming to Sogandere, until the morning we were defeating them. At last, they have gone.

I never heard somebody crying as “Father”, every wounded was crying “Mom.”

After the enemy has left, Sergent Ali had taken three kilos of grapes from their sacs. It was raining. We ate the grapes.

After the enemy has left, they sent some troops to Mecca. They sent our regiment against the Russians. We fought with Russians and the Armenians.

While we were in wars, the deserters formed bands around here. When I returned home, I learnt that those bandits kidnapped my wife. Her name was Medine. I have remarried. I have six children. I have neither a salary nor a medal. Nothing.

I went all around world for wars. Thank God!
